Maserati Mexico

By the end of the 1950s, Maserati had collected a large assortment of various prizes in motorsport. These victories were more than enough for PR. Therefore, the racing program for Maserati began to be gradually curtailed. Well, the model range began to be replenished with recreational vehicles. Dynamic, but without something extreme.

The apotheosis of this trend was the Maserati Quattroporte, whose production began in 1966. Maserati Mexico was also produced on the same platform. Although this car was a four-seater, it still had a two-door body more familiar to Maserati. And Mexico's design was more attractive than that of the Quattroporte.

Prototype

The history of Maserati Mexico begins in October 1965. That year, at the Turin Motor Show, a prototype built by coachbuilder Vignale was presented. The chassis chosen was a Maserati 5000 GT with a 301 ci (4.9-liter engine).

At the end of the auto show, the car was purchased by Mexican President Adolfo Lopez Mateos. And this is one of the reasons why the future large GT car was called Mexico. Although a more plausible version is that the car is named after the Mexican Grand Prix, which was won in 1966 by John Surtees driving a Cooper-Maserati T81.

Presentation and Development

The production Maserati Mexico was presented at the 1966 Paris Motor Show. The two-door coupe shared the platform with the Quattroporte; only the Mexico base was cut by 4,3 in (11 cm). The engine was a V-shaped eight with a displacement of 287 ci (4.7 liters) and a power of 290 hp.

The gearbox is a five-speed ZF. The engine was equipped with four Weber 38 DCNL5 carburetors. The power unit is guaranteed to accelerate the car to 155 mph (250 kph).

In 1969, Maserati Mexico changed the engine. The working volume of the power unit has decreased to 257 ci (4.2 liters). This did not greatly change the dynamic characteristics of the car.

Maserati Mexico was distinguished by its rich equipment and excellent interior trim. There are leather chairs, wooden panels, air conditioning, and electric windows. And this is all standard. But power steering, automatic transmission, and radio were available as options.

The serene life of Maserati Mexico was interrupted by the oil crisis of the early 1970s. Demand for cars with powerful engines went down, and Mexico was discontinued in 1972. A total of 485 coupes were produced, of which 175 were equipped with a 4.7-liter engine.
